The spinning box

For my Cornell box I wanted to create a box that will have a theme of something that I do on a daily basis - spinning yarns. The process in the knitting lab is taking a yarn and spinning it on a cone to make it suitable for the industrial machines.

The movement of the cone and the yarns on the machine is the same one I wanted to present in my box.

I have never worked with Unity before but I do have some knowledge with 3d softwares. First, I made the assets that I wanted in Blender, I used cylinders. I wanted to move the yarn to create a helix shape at the beginning and add more spins until the big cylinder.

A friend of mine suggested that I will try to open an fbx file in Unity after creating a few frames in Blender and it worked. I used the box object from Gabe’s class and went step by step with his recording. First I wanted to give the box a knitted material feeling, so I used a knitted fabric:

I also found a wood material for the cone:

The box was very dark so I played with the point lights and spot lights to project on the cone yarn. I didn't want to use a skybox, I wanted the frame to be the inside of a textile world. There is a small movement of the camera inside so as the yarn spins you're getting closer to it.
