Caregiver Narratives & Clinician Self-Care

After the workshop with Jonny Goldstein I thought a lot about the process and how we can describe our story to another person, sometimes a circle is a ball for one person and a head to another. Stitches by David Small is a very strong noval, seeing how he lost his voice and the way his life kept going was not easy and there were some truly terrifying moments in the book of survival.

One of the toughest things for me with Arthritis is to explain to other people how much my arms hurt and mostly in the winter. I wanted to try and create something physical that will show a representation of the stiffness and how limited my movement is.

Thanks to the textile art center, I went to an old love of mine, Home Knitting machines. I decided to knit 3 layers in different sizes that show the wrapping bandages that I am usually using. The material that I wanted to add to represent the unpleasant feeling is silver net.

Since the net is flexible I could play with the movement and put it on my arm. The feeling was painful, the net scratched my body and limited the way I could move my arm - exactly like the feeling I have of swallowing in my arm joints.
